Creating a leadership development program for Health Care Managers

Many of us work in Leadership Development, and develop programs and/or trainings, and do coaching, to build capacity of leaders.  We know that there are unique challenges facing leaders in health care systems -  be it physicians who are trained to “diagnose and fix” problems and not so much to engage others in problem solving;  nurse managers who have to deal with the professional hierarchy while delivering important messages (otherwise known as “Crucial Conversations”). We’ll select a group to focus on for this meeting, and discuss what we think are the components of an effective leadership development program for this group.  We may refer to existing competency models to narrow our focus of skills to address in such a program.

Bio:  Abby Yanow is an Organizational Development (OD) consultant, Leadership and Team Coach, and principal of Skillful Facilitation.   She coaches leaders to increase their effectiveness, to lead change, and to better engage and motivate their staff.  She also coaches teams to improve their communication, problem solving and decision-making skills, using an Action Learning model.  Abby enjoys delivering trainings on employee engagement, creating a culture of accountability, Immunity to Change, and “Speak Up?!  Encouraging Dissent to Improve Decision Making”.  She is also known as a go-to person for creating communities of practice and professional networks, for learning and for action planning.

Abby has served as President of the Boston Facilitators Roundtable since 2001, which is known for its high-quality programs and its collegial community, where members generously share their wisdom and expertise.  Under her leadership, the BFR has achieved a reputation across New England as a world-class professional association. Abby has a Master’s degree in Intercultural Communication, Certification in Organizational Development from National Training Labs, and is a certified coach through ICF
